We accept externs for variable lengths of time, ranging from a few days to 6 months. Applicants can either be veterinary students (undergraduates) or graduated veterinarians. Collaboration with university programmes (e.g. Erasmus) is possible.

To benefit from their visit, externs must have a good command of the English language and adopt a proactive attitude. Southfields Veterinary Specialists is not a teaching hospital and does not provide organised theoretical and practical teaching programmes. Externs are expected to rapidly blend in and learn by being exposed to the daily clinical activities of specialists, which requires an open, reactive and proactive state of mind. In addition, post-graduate veterinarians visiting for several months are advised to become members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), which entitles them to be given more clinical responsibilities.

Externs can choose to visit one or several departments including Internal Medicine, Oncology, Soft Tissue Surgery and Anaesthesia.

Accommodation is not provided, therefore externs will need to arrange this themselves. Several websites exit to assist in finding a spare room in our area.

If you wish to apply for an externship at Southfields Veterinary Specialists, please provide us with a curriculum vitae and indicate the department(s) you would like to visit, together with the preferred period and duration of your stay. For longer visits (i.e. several weeks and beyond), we would request that you also provide references.

Once we have all your information and documents, your application will be considered and you will be informed whether you have been successful or not. If we are able to offer you an externship, we will let you know availability, matching your preferences as closely as possible.

We hope to make it an enjoyable and learning experience. Externs are encouraged to be helpful to all the members of staff and as a result, staff members will be more likely to share some of their knowledge and time.

Due to the very high demand for externships, we are unable to accept any new visitors until the summer of 2018.

Please contact us again from June 2017 onwards, if you are interested in arranging an externship in 2018.
