Southfields appoints new Head of Exotics

February 8, 2024

A leading Essex animal hospital has appointed a new Head of Exotics who is keen to work closely with colleagues across other disciplines.

Dr Dominic Byron-Chance joins Linnaeus-owned Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon and will be treating animals including birds, domestic fowl, reptiles, mammals such as rabbits, amphibians, arthropods including spiders, fish and zoo animals.

As Head of Exotics, Dominic will take on a clinical role and manage referrals of exotic cases, as well as leading and helping develop the renowned Exotics service at Southfields.

Dominic, who qualified from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham in 2015, said: “I passionately believe the future of specialist exotic species care lies in inter-disciplinary collaboration.

“I know my colleagues at Southfields share my interest in exploring how this can improve diagnostic and treatment options for unusual exotics cases, and I hope to share what we learn to a wider audience through research and publication.”

Dominic added: “I have a particular interest in exotic animal oncology, so I am very excited to be working alongside some of the country’s leading oncologists, with in-house access to Southfield’s new state-of-the-art oncology and radiotherapy suite

“This will open up a whole new world of diagnostic and treatment options for cancer in exotic animals.”

Dominic’s vast experience has seen him undertake a dedicated 18-month exotics species clinical internship, followed by a three-year ECZM avian residency program at an exotic species hospital.

He completed a General Practitioner Certificate in Exotic Animal Practice (GPCert ExAP) with the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ISVPS) in 2020 and has worked solely in the field of exotic, wildlife, and zoological medicine for the past five years.

Outside of work, Dominic enjoys hiking in his native Lake District with his husband and two Border Terriers.
