October 24, 2023

A renowned Emergency and Critical Care clinician has further boosted the expert team at Southfields Veterinary Specialists, a cutting-edge Basildon animal hospital.

Kate Turner joins Linnaeus-owned Southfields Veterinary Specialists and is looking forward to working with a large and diverse multidisciplinary team to deliver gold-standard patient care.

In her role as Emergency and Critical Care consultant, Kate will manage the Intensive Care Unit, deliver critical care to the sickest patients and stabilise and treat critically ill emergency cases.

Kate said: “I aim to further improve my clinical practice through learning and working with a wide range of specialists and further formal training in multiple areas of emergency and critical care. My greatest aim is to help provide exceptional critical care to the clients of Southfields.”

Southfields Veterinary Specialists appoints new Consultant to ECC team

Kate graduated from Murdoch University in Western Australia in 2016 and then worked as an emergency vet and in general practice for a year. Her passion for Emergency and Critical Care saw her take up an internship followed by a residency at a large intensive care unit at a university teaching hospital in Australia. She remained there after completing her boards to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care before moving to the UK to join Southfields.

Her most memorable case to date was an eight-year-old Fox Terrier who was diagnosed with a large mass occupying most of his liver. Surgery was extremely complicated and despite aggressive treatment and a cardiopulmonary arrest in recovery, he made a full recovery. Kate said: “This case highlights that critical care is often fighting against the odds and sometimes you are lucky enough to achieve a miracle and help a beloved family member make it home.”

Southfields Veterinary Specialists moved into its new Basildon hospital last summer. Best-in-class ICU facilities ensure the team can offer a rapid response to handle life-threatening injuries to pets, or dealing with the complexities of an acute disease.

The Emergency and Critical Care team is fully supported by an experienced multi-disciplinary team.
